God’s unconditional love

God’s love for his children is not contingent upon anything they have done it is solely a demonstration of his love and mercy. God as the transcendent and non-contingent Creator of the Universe is not dependent upon any part of his creation in the demonstration of his attributes. God is totally free in demonstrating his grace and love. We who are his children are the unmerited recipients of his love and grace. To say that God’s demonstration of his salvific love is dependent upon some foreseen action of his creatures is an attack upon the aseity of God. For grace to be grace it must be free (Romans 11:6). Some would object and say that is just how God from eternity past chose to demonstrate his love. This is just another way of saying that God sovereignly chose to not be sovereign.

The filo….sop…nat….what!?! Yes, the Philosophical Naturalism Hermeneutic. Let me explain the terms and why I am stringing them together.

Philosophical (the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence)

Naturalism (an assumption that says everything arises from natural properties and causes, and supernatural or spiritual explanations are excluded or discounted)

Hermeneutic (a method or theory of interpreting the Bible)

The Philosophical Naturalism Hermeneutic is the method by which many modern professing Christians interpret the text of Scripture. Philosophical Naturalism is the assumption by which evolutionary proponents interpret scientific evidence. It is an assumption that there is no God therefore supernatural and spiritual causes are not permitted.

It’s wrong to judge

“You shouldn’t judge, it is wrong to judge.” I have heard this self-refuting statement enough times now that I need to address this in a blog post.

One of the favorite verses in the Bible for the unbelieving world is Matthew 7:1 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged” (NIV). We should not be shocked when unbelievers quote the Bible out of context but the thing that concerns me most is when professing Christians quote this verse out of context. Let us examine this verse in it’s context and also with the rest of the Bible. This statement was made by our Lord in the famous Sermon on the Mount, often the individual waving this verse in the face of the Christian is inconsistent because they would reject much of the remaining teachings of Jesus in this sermon. Out of context this verse would seem to fit their world view so they find this verse to be a convenient way to suppress the conviction of God. The very next verse, Matthew 7:2, starts putting this statement into perspective. “For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” (NIV) Jesus is stating here that the standard by which we judge others will be the standard by which God will judge us. The first question we should ask ourselves when reading this verse is what is the proper standard? Is the standard our own arbitrarily assumed standard of right and wrong or should it be grounded on the Word of God? The question is really rhetorical, of course the standard should be the Word of God. We as Christian should be living our lives in line with the Word of God so that we can judge with that proper standard without hypocrisy.

Homosexuality and the Church

The focus of this article is to believers within the Church on the issue of homosexuality.

All unrepented sin is offensive to God and those who practice a lifestyle of unrepented sin will not inherit the kingdom of God. Gal 5:19-21; – (look through this list carefully and we all will see areas we are vulnerable in.) We shouldn’t judge the sin of homosexuality with any greater severity then we do those other sins listed in this passage. We all face temptations and we shouldn’t be any less compassionate to a fellow believer who struggles with the temptation of homosexuality then the temptation of hatred ect… All of us at one time were dead in our sin. Eph 2:1-3; But when we accepted salvation we were freed from the slavery of sin Rom 6:17-18; And we were washed, sanctified and justified in the name of Jesus by the Spirit of God. 1 Cor 6:9-11;

Understanding who we are and where we came from should humble us and give us the right attitude to approach this subject.

World Views (Presuppositional Apologetics)

Every human being’s beliefs about the world has a starting point, a line of reasoning that has a beginning. Most have not even taken the time to think about the fact that they have this starting point, but everyone, no one excluded, has a starting point to all lines of reasoning. Most assume their starting point without giving it any thought.

This starting point can be described as a world view. A world view is comprised of a set of presuppositions and is controlled by an ultimate authority. Some will insist that they have no world view. They may say that they are completely objective and weigh all the evidence for all arguments and choose the one with the most evidence. This may sound good at face value, but the belief that we need to except the possibility of everything and weigh all the evidence is in itself a world view and a rather absurd and self-refuting one at that. They will say they are completely objective but by their own definition of their world view they exclude all world views that they don’t believe to be objective therefore they are not being completely objective. These same people often claim to be tolerant but won’t tolerate a view they deem intolerant. This means they will only tolerate those that share their world view of tolerance. This is very intolerant and therefore refutes their own world view. No human being is completely objective. All approach the evidence with a set of presuppositions and an ultimate authority. As a Christian I do not claim to be completely objective or tolerant. I will not even waste any time examining evolution to see if it might be true or has enough evidence to support it. Any world view outside of the Bible has to argue for itself by borrowing presuppositions from the Biblical world view therefore I have no reason to even entertain it. (I will expound on this further in the article)

Obedience

Prideful obedience to God’s law is no obedience at all. It is like a respectful thief or a honest liar. It is for the praise of men and self-righteousness before God. It cares little about God and only about it’s self. It’s fear is of man rather than God. It stand’s in self-praise to tell God how it’s much goodness outweighs it’s little evil. Realizing the truth that our righteousness is of no value to Him, leaves us standing in horror with nothing but dirty rags in our hands before that frightful and awesome Judge. He value’s humility before obedience for true humility leads to obedience. Humble obedience is not to justify but rather to give thanks and reverence to our Creator, who justified us not by our obedience but by His own.
